First Impressions: A Poll

Time Keeps on ticking ticking ticking... I am very much looking forward to my life never being the same again. With Sutton so close to popping, I am mentally pacing around. We are both pretty ready for something to happen -- ready, not necessarily prepared. We have some nitty gritty to do (and work), but I am just eager to meet the guy.

Several people have said the seeing the child for the first time is indescribable, that something quite unexpected comes over you. I am excited to find out what they are talking about. If you want, please comment and tell me what you felt like when you met your first child for the first time (or, if not your first, your best :)). If you want to express yourself but remain anonymous to the world, email me. I'll post your comment without the name. Thanks!

  1. what i can tell you is that meeting your child for the first time will be indescribable, and perhaps your emotion will not be what you would expect. You may very well be very overcome with joy, a raw emotion that can only be described as primal. i know i see this on the faces of each family upon the birth of their child. i recall how i felt with each birth, and that is different from a mother's perspective, as the mother has the release of hormones, but it is the same primal experience for the father. i would encourage you to take a little time to envision how it is that you want to welcome your child into the world. regardless of how the events of the birth are, but how you want to welcome your child, what you want you want to say, etc... i am always struck with how babies react to their father's voice- amazing! and, if you are anything like me, i recall saying something corny, like "oh my god, oh my god.. my little baby, you are really a baby" (as if i thought t would be an alien, sort of) or " my daughter, my daughter, oh my god.." as i blubbered. i think after gabe was born (he was 10.5 pounds, born on the living room floor) i said "oh shit, thank god" in a very wobbly voice.

but.. you will definitely feel a connection to the rest of the world, humanity, a primal force, a protection over this child that you would risk your life- sort of depth. and it all happens in an instant. for example, one dad said he just wanted to lick his child, like an animal! you will have also the instant love, a deep, deep love not only for this little being you don't really know yet, but for sutton that is again, hard to imagine. i hope that helps? what ever the case, you will be a wonderful father! as you know, i am a "professional" when it comes to this stuff- give me a shout if i can be of help! i am all weepy eyed thinking my uncle roger is having a baby! lol!! enjoy it! btw.. i would think sutton will be a birthing goddess! all the best on your upcoming journey! xxxoo
